What's so special about glass? I have that in my kitchen! Studio glass, the precursor to our contemporary glass, founded the fine art glass movement. Read on to learn the beginnings of glass in art.
The sensationalist title of this post sounds like tabloid fiction, but it’s straight out of the life story of an artist whose work we recently added to our permanent collection. When the museum acquires new works for the collection, one part of the accessioning and cataloguing process is collecting the biographical information of the artist. It’s always interesting to add new artists to the collection and to learn about their lives and work. And, often, these stories are colorful, fascinating, and moving. Here’s one well worth sharing.
In April 1979, internationally known “woman artist” Dorothy Gillespie came to Fort Wayne and wowed the locals with a city-wide exhibition. Learn more about this visiting artist in this post!

Long before J. Ottis Adams, William Forsyth, Otto Stark, T. C. Steele, and Richard Gruelle were dubbed the Hoosier Group, they were a band of unknown but earnest young artists strapped for cash and eager for any opportunity to replenish the funds they had spent on years of rigorous art training in Germany. Interested in architects? Here in Fort Wayne we have a building, right next door to FWMoA, built by the famous Louis Kahn. Another, perhaps more infamous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright is the subject of this months "What We're Reading."
Its summertime and that can only mean one thing at FWMoA – lots of glass on display! Through August 4th we have two stunning exhibits of glassworks by artists Tim Tate and Marlene Rose. Now on view are also several new dazzling glass sculptures that join our more permanent glass pieces, including a collection of American Brilliant Cut Glass.
