When walking through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards exhibit at the FWMoA, it’s a normal occurrence to hear a visitor whisper to their friend, “Wait, these were all made by teens?” While the works of art and writing in this exhibit are striking on their own, what makes them more intriguing is knowing the artists haven’t had decades to hone their craft and find themselves artistically. Every participant is between 13-18 years old.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has served as a creative outlet across the nation, providing a space for censorship-free recognition and encouragement for young creatives. Over 100 affiliates host exhibitions each spring, and The Fort Wayne Museum of Art is proud to serve as the regional affiliate partner for Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio for its 22nd year. The program is ultimately overseen by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, based in New York.
Awards are given to works that demonstrate three main criteria:
- Originality
- Technical skill
and - Personal vision or voice
Students present work in the media or writing category of their choice. Walking through the exhibit, you will see sculptures and poetry, photographs and screenplays. Works can be independently made or as part of a school project.

This year, our region received over 3,200 art and writing entries, with 1,057 of those entries earning recognition as an Honorable Mention, Silver Key, or Gold Key (the regional 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place awards). Dozens of judges dedicate their time every year to adjudicate thousands of pieces in art and writing. When a piece is awarded, it may be the first time a student has had their work acknowledged publicly. Many well known artists have referenced back to this awards program as one of the earliest meaningful steps in their creative career, with alumni including Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, and Yolanda Wisher.

Students, families, friends, and teachers came out to support participants for the opening of the exhibit and the awards ceremony in February. 87 schools were represented by their awarded students, who received certificates, pins, and/or plaques celebrating their achievements.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards exhibit was made possible by the generous donations of Toni Murray, a long time friend of the FWMoA.
To view this exhibit, spanning two galleries, visit the FWMoA by April 12, 2026.
